Minutes of ELAC Meeting of 9/24/09

Number of elected ELAC members present:  6  Number of additional parents: 15 (see attached list)

Number of staff: 4 (Heather Gorman Assistant principal; Jennifer Fish, ELS; Rosario Weckler, MEST; Jennifer Goodheart, Kindergarten teacher )

 

 

 

 

 


Meeting called to order at:        6:40.

Opening:  Heather Gorman, Jennifer Fish, and Rosario Weckler welcomed everyone to the meeting. We introduced ourselves and went over roles and responsibilities as well as the night’s agenda.

 

Meeting Minutes: This was the first meeting of the year (no minutes).

 

Old Business:

             

  • Parents were reminded that the elected ELAC representatives from last year had voted to combine the ELAC and Migrant Parent meetings. Representatives elected at this meeting will vote at the October meeting about whether or not to continue with this combined meeting format.

 

School Events:

  1. Parent Conference Week- Oct. 12-16
  2. Walk for the Arts, Friday Oct. 23, annual fundraiser focused on raising money for art programs in the classroom.  All students participate and parent volunteers are needed for the day.
  3. Home and School club meeting Oct. 13th 6:30 in the Library. All parents are welcome to come.  Childcare is available
  4. Oct. 29th Pizza Night at Straw Hat Pizza in Freedom.  A portion of the profits from all pizzas bought that night goes to Bradley School.

  • Anuual CELDT testing- Presentation by Jennifer Fish
  • What is ELAC a discussion and power point presentation
  •  Nomination of ELAC representatives. 6 parents were nominated to be ELAC representatives. All were confirmed by group vote.

Carlos Gutierrez will continue in his second year as DELAC representative. Jorge Carranza was nominated and elected to be the alternate DELAC rep this year.

 

  • Presentation about effectively communicating with your child’s teacher was given by Heather Gorman, Rosario Weckler, and Jennifer Goodheart.  The parents were asked to give feedback concerning questions that they feel are important for clear communication.

 

Text Box: Elected ELAC members’ Input: Two of last year’s elected members shared with the group about the benefits of being an ELAC representative. It was shared that the students of the ELAC members are making a lot of progress and that parent involvement makes a measurable difference in children’s school success. • Parents reviewed the Teacher/Parent communication form and gave input regarding questions that they would like to see on the form. They generated their own questions and handed them in for school representatives to look at and combine for the form. • Parents nominated each other for ELAC representative. All parents voted to confirm nominees.
