School Site Council Minutes

Members Present:  Kathy Arola, Andrea Carlos Willy, Barry Wallace, Steve Harrington, Kathleen Blair, Maria Castillo, and Alison Hoff.

Call to Order:  Andrea Carlos Willy called the meeting to order at 4:45 p.m.

Introductions:  All members introduced themselves.

Approval of Minutes:                Barry Wallace                          moved

                                                Steve Harrington                       seconded

Technology:  Mr. Bunner gave a summary of what is happening with technology at Bradley School.  Maintaining and upgrading 34 computers.  We will be purchasing 3 new IMacs; only 32 are currently working in the lab.  Will use the old computer parts to “fix” others as they breakdown.  We received a printer/scanner from the District which will be used for scanning tests, among other things.  The school is running more web based programs, instead of site based, which is much cheaper.  An example is the Accelerated Reader program.  Mr. Bunner also uses the computer lab for the after school Advance program, and we may be using it even  more if funding comes through for additional after school programs.

North Zone Report:  Guest speaker was Dr. Fidel Salinas, who, among other things, does online consulting and teaching.  Purpose was to talk about what our kids need to know in these days of technology and comparing us to other countries.  US is falling behind, and other countries are gaining.

Curriculum Council:   Edusoft training – the reason every school got scanner/printer (see “Technology” above).  Will be used for benchmark assessments.  See handout on “ed1stop” from the Santa Cruz County Office of Education.  Science textbook adoption this year.  There was much discussion regarding the process of textbook adoption.  Need more teachers from N. Zone schools to be part of the committee.  Review of core literature sets so students don’t read literature one year and then have to read it again (request from the Junior High).

Block Grant Proposal:  Our request went through.  Hope to have Music program by January.  Other grants are still under discussion.  See handout.  Should know by December how they are being allocated.

Parking Lot Security:  Three break-ins during the Halloween week.  Probably looking for electronic devices.  Note went home from Principal..  Don’t leave valuables in sight in your car.

De Vor Nursery Purchase:  Andrea presented letter she received (as a homeowner in the area).  Mentions minimal use of pesticides with fans.  Meeting this Thursday.  Andrea will attend on behalf of Bradley School and as a nearby homeowner.

Safety:  Ellen Pirie to follow up, as she has not heard back from anyone at the District.

Principal’s Report:  Activities upcoming:  Community of Readers on Wednesday.  Variety Show Friday Nov. 17.  Enrichment Committee is planning the spring musical and should know in the next few weeks what they choose.  First trimester ends Thursday and report cards go home Nov. 17.  T-shirt sales end this Thursday.  Seal was mounted this month by the front door and the enrichment case is mounted around the corner of the office.

Adjournment:  Meeting was adjourned at 5:50 p.m. with the Principal’s Report at the Home and School Club meeting.  Next meeting is Tuesday, December 5 at 4:45 p.m.  Next month Jennifer Fish will be making presentation in services to second language learners. If you have any questions about the second language learner program, please email Kathy so Jennifer can tailor her presentation.
